Search Console indexing issues are warnings or status messages that show Google has not added certain URLs from your website to its search index. In plain English, those pages may exist on your website, but they may not be eligible to appear in Google Search.

The simplest difference is this: a ranking problem means the page can appear in Google but is not performing well. An indexing problem means the page may not be eligible to appear at all.

That is why indexation should be checked before rewriting copy, judging keyword performance or investing in more links. If the page is not indexed, ranking work on that URL cannot have much effect until Google can access, process and choose to include the page.

Why Search Console Indexing Issues Matter

Google Search Console helps you understand how Google is treating URLs on your website. The Page indexing report shows indexed and non-indexed pages, including reasons why URLs could not be indexed. The URL Inspection tool provides page-level information about Google’s indexed version of a specific page and can test whether a live URL may be indexable.

These statuses are not all errors. Redirected URLs, duplicate parameter URLs, deliberately noindexed pages and old 404s may be handled correctly. The priority is to identify excluded URLs that should genuinely be available in search.

Common Causes of Search Console Indexing Issues

The Page Is Blocked from Crawling

A robots.txt rule tells crawlers which URLs they can access. It is mainly used to manage crawler access, not as a reliable way to keep a page out of Google. If the goal is to prevent a page from appearing in search, Google recommends using noindex or password protection instead.

Robots.txt problems often appear after a staging rule is pushed live, a redesign changes crawl rules, ecommerce filters are blocked too broadly, or important folders are disallowed by mistake.

If a URL should be indexed, Google needs to be able to access it properly. If Googlebot cannot crawl the page, the next steps are limited until that access problem is fixed.

The Page Has a Noindex Directive

A noindex directive tells Google not to index a page. This is useful for pages that should stay out of search results, but damaging when applied to the wrong URLs. Google’s documentation explains how noindex can block search indexing.

This often happens when service pages are left noindexed after launch, product or category templates inherit the wrong setting, blog posts are noindexed by a CMS rule, or staging settings are copied into the live website.

If a priority URL is excluded by noindex, the first fix is usually straightforward: remove the noindex directive, test the live URL, then monitor the page.

Google Has Selected a Different Canonical URL

Canonical tags help indicate the preferred version of duplicate or similar pages. However, Google can choose a different canonical from the one specified, especially when signals are inconsistent or when another page appears to be the stronger representative version.

This can happen when two pages are too similar, internal links point to the wrong version, XML sitemaps include inconsistent URLs, the canonical target is unclear, or product, filter and parameter URLs create duplication.

A different Google-selected canonical is not always wrong. Sometimes Google is choosing the better page. The review should check whether that choice makes sense for users and for the site’s SEO structure.

The Page Is Thin or Too Similar to Other Pages

Indexing problems are not always technical. Sometimes Google crawls a page but does not appear to treat it as useful or distinct enough to index separately.

This is common with ecommerce category pages that have little unique content, product pages using manufacturer descriptions only, location pages with repeated boilerplate copy, overlapping service pages, repeated blog topics, and low-value tag or archive pages.

These issues often need developer involvement because they can affect many URLs at template, server or platform level.

Worked Example: A Service Page Excluded After a Redesign

A company launches a redesigned website and notices that one of its main service pages is not appearing in Google. The page is live, linked in the navigation and included in the XML sitemap, but Search Console shows it as “Excluded by noindex tag”.

The page itself looks fine in a browser, so the problem is easy to miss. The issue is not the copy, page design or keyword targeting. The issue is that a noindex directive from the staging version of the site was carried over to the live page.

How to Assess Search Console Indexing Issues

A good indexing review does not start with every excluded URL. It starts with judgment.

First, decide which URL types actually matter. A noindexed thank-you page, an old redirected URL or a duplicate filter URL may not need action. A service page, ecommerce category, key product page, location page or recently migrated URL deserves closer attention because it may support search visibility, sales or enquiries.

The fix should match the cause. Treating every indexing issue the same way usually leads to wasted effort.

If a useful URL is blocked, remove the access problem first. That may involve robots.txt, meta robots tags, X-Robots-Tag headers, CMS SEO settings, password protection, staging restrictions, firewall rules or CDN behaviour. Once the page is accessible, test it and monitor Search Console. Requesting indexing can help Google discover the update, but Google says repeated recrawl requests do not make a URL crawl faster.

If the page is noindexed by mistake, remove the noindex directive and find out where it came from. A page-level setting is easy to fix, but a template, plugin, server header or staging configuration may affect many URLs. In that case, the fix should include a wider check of similar pages.

If Google chose the wrong canonical, do not only change the canonical tag and hope for the best. Align the wider signals. The preferred URL should be the one used in internal links, sitemaps, redirects and canonical tags. If several similar pages compete for the same purpose, consolidation may be stronger than trying to index every version.

If the page was crawled but not indexed, improve the page before asking Google to reconsider it. This may mean expanding thin content, improving product or category descriptions, reducing duplicate copy, clarifying the page’s purpose, adding relevant internal links or removing low-value URLs from sitemaps.
