business not showing on google maps

If your business cannot be found on Google Maps at all — not low down, not for some searches, but absent even when you search its exact name — the cause is almost always the status of the listing rather than anything about your website or your SEO.

Start by searching your exact business name plus your suburb. What happens next tells you which problem you have.

Nothing appears at all

The profile was never verified

An unverified profile does not appear publicly. This is the single most common cause, and it frequently affects businesses that created a listing months ago and assumed it went live. Verification postcards to South African complex and estate addresses fail often and silently. See Google Business Profile verification.

The profile is suspended

A suspended profile disappears from Maps immediately. Common triggers are keywords in the business name, an address that does not qualify, or several edits made at once. Do not create a replacement — it makes recovery harder. See suspended profiles.

There is no profile

Sometimes the listing was never created, or was created on a personal account nobody still has access to. Search for the business as a customer would before assuming it exists.

It appears, but the details are wrong or duplicated

  • A duplicate listing is outranking the one you manage, often inherited from a previous owner or agency.
  • An old address persists from before a move.
  • Someone else claimed it. Listings can be created by third parties and claimed without the owner’s knowledge.

Where duplicates exist, they need consolidating rather than deleting at random. See one vs multiple profiles.

Eligibility

Not every business qualifies for a listing. You need to serve customers face to face, either at your premises or at theirs. A purely online business with no in-person contact is not eligible, and no amount of troubleshooting changes that.

Where you travel to customers, the profile must be set up as a service area business with the address hidden. Publishing a home address you do not trade from is a leading cause of suspension. See service area SEO.

Working through it

  • Search your exact business name and suburb, signed out of your Google account.
  • Check the profile’s status in the Google Business Profile dashboard — unverified and suspended are stated there.
  • Search for duplicates using your phone number and address.
  • Confirm the business qualifies under the eligibility rules.
  • If suspended, fix the cause before requesting reinstatement.

Searching while signed in is misleading, because Google shows you your own listing more readily than it shows a stranger. Always check signed out.

Frequently asked questions

How long after verifying before it appears?

Usually within days. If a verified profile is still absent after two weeks, something else is wrong — check for suspension or a duplicate.

Why can I see it but customers cannot?

Because you are signed in as the owner. Check signed out, or ask someone else to search.

Can I have a listing without a physical address?

Yes, as a service area business, provided you meet customers in person somewhere. You cannot have one with no in-person contact at all.

Does my website affect whether the profile appears?

Not for whether it exists. Your website affects how well it ranks once it does appear.

If your profile does appear when you search its exact name but never surfaces for the services you offer, that is a visibility problem rather than an existence one — see Google Business Profile not showing. If it appears and simply sits too low, see profile not ranking.
