seo strategy review

An SEO strategy review is an independent assessment of a plan someone else has produced. It answers a narrow question: is the strategy you have been given sound, and is it the right one for your business?

It exists because SEO proposals are hard to evaluate from outside the field. Recommendations sound plausible, deliverables sound substantial, and the person best placed to judge is usually the person who wrote them.

This is deliberately narrower than auditing your website. If you need your site examined rather than a plan examined, that is an SEO strategy audit.

When a second opinion is worth getting

  • You have been given a proposal and cannot tell whether the scope is reasonable for the price.
  • An agency has been retained for months and you are unsure whether the work is compounding.
  • Two providers have proposed very different approaches and you must choose.
  • Internal stakeholders disagree about direction and want a neutral read.
  • Reporting shows activity and improving metrics, but enquiries have not moved.
  • You are about to commit significant budget and want the plan pressure-tested first.

What gets assessed

Whether the targets are right

  • Do the targeted queries reflect genuine commercial demand for your business?
  • Are they achievable given your current authority, or aspirational?
  • Is there a clear owner page for each, or overlapping coverage?
  • Have obvious opportunities been left out?

Whether the sequence makes sense

  • Are dependencies respected, or is content planned on top of unresolved technical problems?
  • Is the highest-value work early, or deferred behind lower-impact activity?
  • Are quick wins identified, or is everything long-horizon?
  • Is the plan sequenced at all, or simply a list?

Whether it can be measured

  • Are success criteria defined in terms the business cares about, or only in rankings and traffic?
  • Is there a baseline, and was it captured before work began?
  • Are review points defined, with a stated basis for continuing or changing course?
  • Would you be able to tell, in six months, whether this worked?

Whether the risks are acknowledged

  • Does the plan promise outcomes that cannot be promised, such as specific rankings or dates?
  • Are irreversible changes flagged as such?
  • Is there a stated position on what happens if the approach does not work?

What you receive

  • A plain assessment of whether the strategy is sound, with reasoning.
  • Specific concerns tied to specific parts of the plan.
  • Anything materially missing from it.
  • Questions to put to the provider, phrased so the answers are informative.
  • Where relevant, what a different approach would prioritise instead.

A review does not automatically conclude that existing work is wrong. Frequently the plan is sound and the finding is that expectations about timing need adjusting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an audit of my website?

No. A review assesses a plan or the work being done against it. An audit examines the website itself. If your question is “is my site healthy”, you want an audit; if it is “is this plan sensible”, you want a review.

Will you tell me to fire my agency?

Only if the evidence supports it, and that is not the usual outcome. More often the finding is that the plan is reasonable but the measurement or the timeline expectations need fixing, which is a conversation rather than a replacement.

What do you need from me?

The proposal or strategy document, any reporting produced so far, and read access to Search Console and analytics. Without the underlying data a review can only assess the plan’s internal logic, not whether it fits your actual position.

How long does a review take?

Typically days rather than weeks, since the scope is bounded by the document under review rather than by the size of your site.
