The services section of a Google Business Profile is left empty on most profiles, which makes filling it in one of the cheapest improvements available. It is one of the few places you can state plainly what you do, in your own words, on the asset that drives map results.
Why it matters
- It supports relevance for searches your category alone does not cover.
- It appears on your profile, so it does work for people as well as for ranking.
- It is free text you control, unlike the category list.
- Competitors mostly have not done it.
Your category decides which searches you are eligible for at all; services help within that. Neither substitutes for the other. See Google Business Profile categories.
Adding them
Google suggests a list of services based on your primary category. Accept the ones that apply, then add custom services for anything the list misses — which is usually where the value is, because the suggestions are generic.
- Use the words customers use, not your internal terminology.
- One service per entry. Do not pack several into one line.
- Add a description where the field allows. Most profiles leave these blank.
- Only list what you actually do. Listing services you do not provide creates bad enquiries and risks the profile.
- Keep it current as your offering changes.
Make the website agree
A service listed on the profile but absent from your website is a weak claim. The strongest arrangement is a service listed on the profile and backed by a real page on the site covering it properly.
If you are adding services to the profile, check which have no corresponding page. That list is usually your content plan. See service pages vs location pages.
Multiple locations
Services are set per profile, so branches offering different services should list different services. Copying one list across every location misrepresents branches and wastes the opportunity to differentiate them.
Frequently asked questions
How many services should I list?
Everything you genuinely offer, described in the terms customers use. There is little cost to being thorough, provided each entry is real.
Do services affect ranking?
They contribute to relevance. They will not overcome a wrong primary category, which is the stronger signal.
Custom or suggested services?
Both. Suggested ones are recognised categories; custom ones let you use your actual language. Most profiles benefit from a mix.
What if my service is not offered in the list?
Add it as a custom service. That is what the field is for.
