google business profile not showing

This is the frustrating middle case: the profile exists, it is verified, and searching your business name by name brings it up — but it never appears when someone searches for the service you provide. The listing is fine. What is failing is relevance.

Appearing by name proves the profile is live. It proves nothing about whether Google considers you a match for “plumber in Randburg”, which is a separate judgement made per search.

The category is the first thing to check

Your primary category determines which searches you are eligible for at all. If it does not match the service being searched, no amount of reviews or optimisation puts you in those results — you are not in the running.

This resolves a large share of cases and takes minutes to check. Compare your category against businesses that do appear for the search. See Google Business Profile categories.

Distance from the searcher

Local results are heavily proximity-weighted. A search from three suburbs away may legitimately never show you, while the same search from outside your door does. This is not a fault to fix; it is how local search works.

It also means testing from your own premises gives a flattering and useless picture. Test from where your customers actually are.

The profile is too incomplete to compete

  • Services not listed. The services section is where you state what you do. Most profiles leave it empty.
  • No description, or one stuffed with keywords rather than describing the business.
  • Few or no photographs.
  • Few reviews, or none recently. Both volume and recency matter. See Google reviews SEO.
  • Hours missing or wrong.

A profile competing against complete ones with the same category will lose on completeness alone.

Your website is not supporting it

Google cross-references the profile against your site. If your site has no page about the service being searched, the association is weak. A profile claiming a service the website never mentions is a thin signal.

Building real service pages is often what moves a profile into results it was previously absent from. See service pages vs location pages.

Checking it properly

  • Search the service term signed out, from a location where a customer would search.
  • Note which businesses appear and check their primary category against yours.
  • Check whether the service is listed in your profile’s services section.
  • Check whether your website has a page for that service.
  • Compare review counts with those appearing.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I appear for some services and not others?

Because eligibility is judged per search. Your category and content support some terms strongly and others barely at all.

I have good reviews — why does that not carry me?

Reviews influence position among businesses already considered relevant. They do not make an irrelevant category relevant.

Does adding more categories help?

Adding a genuinely accurate one can. Adding many loosely related ones dilutes relevance rather than extending it.

How long after fixing the category?

Category changes usually take effect within days, which makes it one of the few local adjustments with fast feedback.

If nothing appears at all, even searching your exact business name, the profile may be unverified, suspended or duplicated — see business not showing on Google Maps. If it does appear but below competitors, see profile not ranking.
