is shopify good for seo

Yes, with real constraints. Shopify handles the technical fundamentals well enough that most stores never need to think about them, and it imposes a few limits you cannot configure away.

For most merchants the platform is not what is holding the store back.

What it does well

  • Fast, reliable hosting without server management.
  • Clean, server-rendered HTML on core templates, so content is available without rendering complications.
  • Automatic canonical tags, which handles the duplicate-path problem correctly by default.
  • An automatic sitemap that stays current.
  • Editable titles and meta descriptions on products, collections and pages.
  • Mobile-ready themes.

A merchant on Shopify starts from a sounder technical position than most self-hosted stores achieve.

The real constraints

URL structure is fixed

Products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/. These cannot be changed. It is cosmetic rather than damaging, and it does prevent the flat structures some merchants want.

Duplicate product paths

Products are reachable at both /products/handle and /collections/name/products/handle. Shopify canonicalises correctly, and themes often link to the collection-scoped version, which is less efficient to crawl. Linking directly to the canonical form is the fix.

Limited control over faceted navigation

Filter handling is less configurable than on self-hosted platforms, which matters on large catalogues. See faceted navigation SEO.

The blog is weak

Shopify’s blogging is basic. Stores competing on content often find it limiting.

Apps accumulate

Each app adds scripts. A store with twenty apps is usually slow, and that is the most common performance problem on the platform — not Shopify itself.

What actually limits most Shopify stores

Not the platform. Thin collection pages with no content, product descriptions copied from the manufacturer, no internal linking beyond navigation, and collections built without regard to what people search.

Those are the same problems stores have everywhere, and they are all fixable within Shopify. See Shopify SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Is WooCommerce better for SEO?

More configurable, and configurability cuts both ways — it also permits more mistakes. See WooCommerce vs Shopify SEO.

Can I remove /collections/ from URLs?

No. Link to the canonical /products/handle form from your templates instead.

Do I need an SEO app?

Rarely. Most duplicate what Shopify already does or what a theme edit handles. See Shopify SEO audit.

Is Shopify Plus better for SEO?

It adds capability at the platform level rather than ranking advantages. See Shopify Plus SEO.
