Setting a service area on your Google Business Profile tells Google where you are willing to travel. It does not make you rank across that area, and the difference between those two things causes a lot of wasted effort.
What service areas actually do
- They display where you say you operate, which helps people decide whether to contact you.
- They allow you to hide your address, which is required if you do not receive customers there.
- They do not extend your ranking radius. Adding twenty suburbs does not make you appear in twenty suburbs.
This is the point people most often get wrong. Service areas are a statement of willingness, not a ranking instruction.
Proximity still governs the map pack
Local pack results are heavily weighted by distance from the searcher. Someone searching from a suburb far from your registered location is unlikely to see you in the pack, whatever your service area says.
Adding more areas does not change this, and adding areas you cannot realistically serve produces enquiries you have to decline. See why a profile is not ranking.
What does extend your reach
The organic results beneath the map pack are far less proximity-bound, and that is where a service area business can genuinely widen its catchment.
- Real pages for the areas you serve, with content specific to each rather than a template with the name swapped.
- Evidence of working there — projects, case studies, references to local landmarks and conditions.
- Reviews mentioning those areas, which accumulate naturally if you ask customers where the work was done.
- Authority, which lifts organic performance generally.

How many areas to list
List where you will genuinely travel. There is a limit on how many can be added, and stuffing it with every suburb in the province dilutes the signal without extending reach.
A tighter, honest list paired with real pages for your main areas outperforms a long list with nothing behind it.
Frequently asked questions
Will adding more areas improve rankings?
No. It is the most common misconception about the setting. Reach comes from pages, reviews and authority.
Should I hide my address?
If you do not receive customers there, yes — it is required, and publishing a home address you do not trade from risks the profile. See suspended profiles.
Can I rank in an area with no presence?
In organic results, with genuine content, yes. In the map pack from that area, rarely.
Do service areas affect which searches I appear for?
They contribute context. Your category and proximity do far more.
