Traffic holding while enquiries fall is a genuinely different problem from a traffic decline, and applying SEO remedies to it wastes effort. Your visibility is intact. Something between arrival and enquiry changed.
Rule out measurement first
The most common explanation, and the cheapest to check.
- Form or checkout broken, or a validation error rejecting submissions silently.
- Enquiries arriving but not being recorded: tracking removed during a redesign, or a thank-you page changed.
- Emails going to spam, or a notification address that no longer exists.
- Phone tracking changed or a number replaced.
- Analytics goals reconfigured, so the same enquiries are no longer counted.
Submit a test enquiry yourself before investigating anything else. A surprising share of these cases end here.
Then check whether the traffic changed composition
Total sessions can hold while the mix shifts entirely, and that looks identical in an aggregate chart.
- Compare traffic by landing page. A guide gaining traffic while a service page loses it produces flat totals and fewer enquiries.
- Compare branded against non-branded queries.
- Check whether new rankings are on informational rather than commercial terms.
- Check device mix, since mobile converts differently.
- Check geography, particularly if you rank in areas you do not serve.
This is the most common genuine cause. Content work that attracts readers rather than buyers produces exactly this pattern, and it is a targeting problem rather than a conversion one. See SEO keyword strategy.
Then the page itself
- Was the page redesigned? Calls to action moved, removed or made less prominent.
- Did pricing appear or disappear? Both change conversion sharply.
- Did page speed regress, particularly on mobile? See Core Web Vitals.
- Did a form gain fields? Each additional field costs completions.
- Did trust signals change: reviews, credentials, contact details?
Then the market
- A competitor changed pricing or positioning.
- Your prices moved relative to alternatives.
- Seasonal shifts in buying behaviour rather than in interest.
- Economic conditions affecting your category specifically.
The diagnostic order
- Submit a test enquiry through every route you offer.
- Confirm tracking records it.
- Compare traffic composition, not just volume.
- Compare conversion rate by landing page rather than sitewide.
- Review what changed on the pages that convert.
- Only then consider market explanations.
Frequently asked questions
Could this be an SEO problem at all?
Yes, in one specific way: if your targeting shifted toward informational queries, you are attracting visitors who were never going to enquire. That is an SEO decision with a conversion symptom.
Traffic is up and enquiries are flat. Same thing?
Usually yes, and it is the clearer version of the signal. Growth in the wrong traffic looks like success in aggregate reporting while producing nothing commercially.
How do I tell targeting from conversion?
Compare conversion rate by landing page. If the commercial pages still convert at their usual rate and the new traffic lands elsewhere, it is targeting. If the commercial pages themselves convert worse, it is the page.
Should I stop the content programme?
Not necessarily. Informational content has a role. But it should route qualified readers toward commercial pages, and if it does not, the internal linking is the gap. See internal linking services.

If your traffic is stable and your enquiries are not, book an SEO consultation to establish whether it is tracking, targeting or the pages themselves.
